Identifying
There are students who move into our district from out of the country, often times without their parents. They live with an extended family member (aunt, uncle, cousin, grandparent, etc) or a friend. Are they considered homeless since they aren’t living with a legal parent or guardian? Is this considered unaccompanied even if it’s a stable home environment? What if their parents ARE with them and they are choosing to live with another family? Is that considered doubling-up?
Important
Well said @sarahdye. These situations students are experiencing can be very complex!
@hjohnson This is always so confusing for me as well. Unaccompanied would still go back to the definition of homeless, so are they in a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence? If the answer is yes, then they are unaccompanied youth(UY). If the answer is no, then they are unaccompnaied homeless youth(UHY).
If families are living multigenerational or doubledup due to choice it is not necessarily a homeless situation. However, if the choice was made due to economic hardship it may be something that needs to be inquired about a little more thoroghly.
