Eligibility After a House Fire
I had an interesting question brought to me the other day. Is a student eligible for McKinney-Vento if they experienced a fire and the family is staying in a hotel paid for by the insurance company? What are your thoughts?
Important
Yes if a student is displaced for a reason out of their control such as a house fire, they are entitled to continue to attend the school of origin (you). The district of origin is responsible for 50% of the cost or providing a leg of service one way for that student each day. The district they are residing in outside of the district of origin is responsible for the other 50%. My advice is that you reach out with the student information to the new district they are residing in and let them choose to provide service one way each day or reimburse you for 50% of the cost of the child’s daily transport. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
