Drivers Training Costs?
I have a family asking if they could get help for Driver’s Training costs for their student. They gave a reason as it is helping with taking away the transportation barrier. This student is now living in Bath and is able to use the school bus. They would like written clarification of the reason for denial, including any applicable policy or guidance. From my understanding this is not a service that M-V covers or am I wrong? How should I handle this?

For instance, if the student is 18, they may be able to obtain their license more quickly than a younger student. Similarly, if it is early in the school year, enabling the student to drive themselves could support more consistent attendance and stability. Ultimately, the district should consider what option best supports the student’s educational access and success. Providing these details to your regional grant coordinator will help determine whether this would be an allowable use of funds.

The transportation method or choice determined by the district is not disputable, as long as it does not create additional barriers to enrollment or attendance. In this case, the student is able to access the school bus, which effectively removes the transportation barrier. While driver’s training can be helpful in the long term, it does not remove the immediate barrier to school participation. Connecting the family to community programs or organizations that offer low-cost or free driver’s education can still support their goals. I would encourage you to reach out to your Regional Grant Coordinator for community partner resources to share with the family that may offer assistance with driver’s training costs.
