Weird MV Question

Weird MV Question

So I received this question from our social worker. Can Title 1 funds cover something like this?

So I have a family that is MKV and the student has had a chronic lice problem. I was talking with the principal about lice clinic’s where families can take their kids and they will make sure they are completely lice free. I don’t think they are cheap, but wondered if we had any funds that might cover some of that cost?

    • Great response Irma! I would like to suggest reaching out to that clinic and sharing information about MV. They may offer to service this student for free or for a discounted rate. From there, you could solicit donations from local businesses. There is a strong possibility that there is another community agency that will provide this service for the family. Have you tried calling 2-1-1?

    • First, services must be reasonable and necessary to assist students experiencing homelessness to take advantage of educational opportunities. (So the cost would be a factor for reasonable)
      (ESEA Section 1113(c)(3)(A); 2 CFR § 200.403(a))

Second, Title I, Part A Homeless Set Aside funds must be used only as a last resort when funds or services are not available from other public or private sources, such as the USDA’s National School Lunch Program and Breakfast Program, public health clinics, or local discretionary funds (such as those provided by the PTA) used to generally provide similar services for students who are economically disadvantaged. (Can funding be provided from another source first)
      (See ESEA Section 1115(e)(2))
