Students Arriving Early

Students Arriving Early

We’re running into a challenge with one of our schools. The student is McKinney and coming from a neighboring district. For transportation purposes, it’s more efficient if the student arrives around 8:30. School officially starts at 9:05, and the doors open at 8:55. Has anyone run into this before. Does the law indicate anything about having to accommodate a student who arrives early? I know that we have to excuse tardies if the student arrives late due to transportation arrangements, but this is the first time we’ve had a student actually arriving too early.

    • If there is a before school program that they can be transported to instead and they can provide transportation to school…

    • I had a student that served as a bus monitor to help pass some time. I’ve also seen where the liaison asked the SRO (security guard) to allow the student to sit with him in the morning since he was one of the first in the building.

    • There are many considerations and the age of the student will play into these options. Is there any before school programming/zero hour/childcare available? Is there anyway to shift the student’s pick up time at home or change the order of the pick up/drop off. Safety, security and ensuring the student can attend school for the full day are all critical pieces in the puzzle. Where might you find flexibility among this situation and still satisfy all three of these pieces? If the student is old enough, could they assist with setting up breakfast? What other suggestions might other folks have out there @here.

Heyyyy, Miss Karen!! 🙂 Could the student help school staff set up for food service breakfasts when they arrive? Are there tasks they might help with in the school office? Could they help their own teacher or others to prepare materials for the day? Rather than have the student sit and wait, let them be a useful resource to the school! Make them feel needed and important!
