School Library Month

School Library Month

School libraries are more than just places to read; they’re consistent, welcoming spaces that can provide a sense of stability for students experiencing homelessness. As McKinney-Vento liaisons, this month is a great opportunity to connect with your school librarians to help build a stronger foundation of support for students experiencing homelessness.

Here are a few ways to get started:

– Work with librarians to offer hygiene kits, school supplies, or snacks in the library.
– Encourage flexible loan policies and safe storage for students without a stable place to keep their materials.
– Librarians often form strong, trusting connections with students. Share information about the McKinney-Vento program and ways to refer students in need.
– Help create book displays featuring themes of resilience, identity, and overcoming challenges.

Every student deserves a space where they feel safe, supported, and inspired. Libraries can be that space, and liaisons play a key role in strengthening those connections.

I have set aside a area in our library for students to go to when they need time away from the classroom. Has been very useful

@Aspen-FamilyResources – I’m so glad!!! FYI, we have many posts in the Forums and Q&A that are informative, engaging, and sometimes just fun. Have you had a chance to go back and read any? You may pick up a good tip or two, or leave some behind for someone else. 😉
