Resources

How do you provide resources to MV students and families? For example, when a student needs clothing, what is your normal procedure? When a student needs transportation, how is that provided?

Our procedures varied throughout the year. In my previous district, I have personally taken students shopping, provided gift cards so they can shop for themselves, purchased the clothing myself and delivered it to the school, and I’ve also referred them to outside agencies. The method would depend on current funding, the level of urgency, or even what my schedule looked like for the week.

We have a clothing closet at each of the schools, as well as a mini food pantry – where students can come and pick clothes & foods out what they want. For the clothing closets, we swap clothes with other schools (swap within our two elementary schools for example) so that the kiddo that donated a piece of their clothing doesn’t necessarily see it on another student walking down the hall.

We also just had a “thrifting” event where any kiddo in the school can come and thrift from the clothes closet. I’m not sure who thought of that, but I thought it was a brilliant idea.

    • @AmandaO tell me more about the wishlists. How does the process go? Does the community purchase the items for the families?

    • We utilize Amazon wishlists quite frequently and I have the families/students add all of their requested items in the proper sizes. We have a small clothing closet at the school at well that students are able to come in and pull items from.
