On this day, in 1987…

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was signed into law. Although we are familiar with the Act, today is a good day to refresh our memory. This crucial federal law ensures that children and youth experiencing homelessness receive the support they need, with a specific focus on their educational rights and the removal of barriers to their enrollment, attendance, and success in school. It requires schools to enroll students immediately, even without standard documentation, and ensures they have access to equal educational opportunities. As we reflect on this important law, let’s also recognize and appreciate the efforts of Congressmen Stewart McKinney and Bruce Vento, whose advocacy continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children experiencing homelessness.
