MV funds for a Bike as Transportation?

MV funds for a Bike as Transportation?

A team member asked me – Can we buy a bike for a high school student who has difficulty getting to school? He had a bike of his own but it was stolen. I see transportation is something that is offered on MV expenses, but it doesn’t specifically say “bike.” Thoughts?

      @RachelMV @KellyMV @SarahMV Thank you!

      1. Is a barrier for the student transportation? Yes, although the student is on the bus route, he stays later than the bus because he helps his younger brother off to school. He then used to get a ride with a friend, but that friend has since moved schools.

      2. How old is the student and how far would the ride be to and from school? 16 years old. Approximately 1.5 miles according to Mapquest.

      3. Is it safe for a student of this age to travel this distance alone? I would say yes, with parent permission.

      4. Would the family agree to allow a student to ride a bike to and from school? Yes, they have in the past. He used to use a bike to get to and from school as a back up method of transportation, but his bike was recently stolen.

      Yes, won’t forget the helmet! Now looking for a local bike shop to donate. I knew I’d get great info here – thank you!

      • @emackie – thanks for being here and using the portal! It sounds like you are doing an amazing job at helping brainstorm solutions for this student.

        I would get some safety lights for the bike too since it’s so dark in the mornings. If you do end up getting a bike, come back and tell us about how’s it going. πŸ™‚

        See if you can get a lock too! Keep this transportation safe! πŸ˜‰

    • @emackie – do you have any local bike shops? We once had a bike, helmet and lock donated for a student. πŸ™‚

      Hi @emackie. Adding to what @SarahMV mentioned, if this is something your district purchases to remove the transport barrier, make sure the student also has a bike helmet. 😊

      @emackie thanks for this question. Transportation is always a crazy area for us to try to support our families, let me ask a couple clarifying questions.
      1. Is a barrier for the student transportation?
      2. How old is the student and how far would the ride be to and from school?
      3. Is it safe for a student of this age to travel this distance alone?
      4. Would the family agree to allow a student to ride a bike to and from school?

      With a little more clarification I think we could definetly come to a decision. I can say in my state (Michigan) this has been done previously, uder certain situations.
