MV and Natural Disasters

My heart is with everyone affected by the fires in southern California. It is so heartbreaking to see the devastation that people are experiencing. I wanted to share a few bits of information about how McKinney-Vento factors into natural disasters:

The MV Act is a federal law that ensures children and youth experiencing homelessness, including those displaced by disasters, have the right to:

– Immediate School Enrollment: A child can be enrolled in school immediately, even without the usual paperwork or if there has been a missed application or enrollment deadline due to homelessness.

– School Stability: Many children and youth displaced by disasters may have to stay far from their previous school. If someone has fled the crisis and is now in another state, the child has the right to immediate enrollment in the school district where they are currently living.
