Emergency Housing

Emergency Housing

As a school district we’ve been getting more and more calls from families who say that community agencies are telling them to contact the school MV liaison regarding emergency housing or other help with housing resources. Are others having this experience? We’ve been able to work with our local RESA in certain situations but with winter coming soon, I’m worried that this may increase.

@hbodjanac @jonesr – Have you reached out to your faith based partners? Sometimes multiple faith groups will come together to meet the need of the family. Another resource, St. Vincent De Paul, may assist provided they have funding. Call 877 ST VINCE and provide your zip code, they usually return your call within 24 hours. Another strategy is to try shelter diversion with the family by exploring all possible supports they have (family, friends, friends of the students, faith groups) to stay with temporarily. Sometimes talking through options helps them realize they do have supports. It may mean that the family may need to temporarily split into more than one location while a more permanent option is realized.

What counties are your districts in?

We do not have shelters and no community of housing to assist with emergency housing, other than a few nights in a hotel. This however, is not sustainable. What local resources have you tapped into to help with this?

    • Same here. We do not have shelters in our city as well as very little subsidized housing. I just keep referring families to our local housing supports and some families end up having to move.

Yes! That is happening to me as well. And sadly in our community we don’t have any shelters. With the ARP money I was able to provide emergency shelter placing families in hotels but that money is gone. I miss it! We do not have enough homeless families to apply for the grant.

Same – we were able to do some great things through ARP but now that’s gone and I was careful to tell families that we had a grant that allowed us to do things outside of what we could normally do, but I’m feeling helpless with housing needs.
