Determining Eligibility
Hi! I’m new to my role and did not have much instruction left behind from my predecessor. I’m wondering if anyone can share their process for determining/confirming eligibility? I’m at a charter school and we have a questionnaire that families can fill out but no process or steps to confirm status. Any advice, processes, or resources would be so helpful! Thanks!

Hi Monique, It sounds like you have a process for your front office staff to share with you the results from the questionnaire. That is a great first step. Determining eligibility most often requires a conversation with the family. Begin your conversation with the reason you are contacting them and then some information about what McKinney-Vento is. I think it is important to make sure not to use the word homeless since some families may be reluctant to identify as that for fear of negative action being taken or the stigma attached to that. I use the words living in transition. You can then use the Determining Fixed, Regular and Adequate Worksheet found in the Resource Library for specific questions to ask. I like to apologize ahead of time for the personal questions I will be asking so the family knows I respect their privacy but need to ask in order to determine what support they may need.
