Seeking clarity
Hello Everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. I have a question regarding the McKinney-Vento rights. We identified a student as unhoused at the start of the school year. If this student transfers to another district and that district is notified of the student’s status under McKinney-Vento, and the liaison confirms the housing situation, should the new district also classify the student as homeless for their student count?
Additionally, if the student returns and is no longer unhoused, should we update their status in our records as permanently housed, or continue to code them under McKinney-Vento for our student count?
Thank you for your assistance.
Thank you,

Hello Robin! This information from the MSDS Manual may be helpful in answering this question.
Once reported, the district should continue to report the homeless component for the
student in subsequent collections that year. If a homeless student moves and is stably
housed in the new district, the component is not required, however a warning will be
generated to remind districts that the student is still eligible and entitled to any services
needed.
If the student moves to a new district and is still experiencing homelessness, the new district would code them as such.
This next part I need to get confirmation of but I believe if the student returns to you the same school year but is now stably housed I think it would be ok to still code as homeless. Though it appears if they are not coded as homeless upon their return that would be ok as long as that designation was submitted in the Fall or Spring collection.
