Due to the housing crisis, we have motels and cabins that rent out their units weekly/monthly. In the summer the families must leave. In the fall they can stay until late spring when cabins begin getting booked again.
I have a family that was allowed to stay year round in lieu of cutting firewood and taking on almost a groundskeeper/maintenance role at the cabins. Is this still considered McKinney Vento if they do not have to leave? They do not have an address where mail can be sent and they cannot provide proof of residency. They have been here longer than a year as well. I know this family is having a hard time finding housing due to criminal background and family size.

That is great the family can stay there year-round and that they have been there for almost a year. However, the fact that they cannot provide a standard lease or proof of residency is a major indicator. If they can be asked to leave at any time without the legal protection of a formal eviction process (typical of motels/cabins), the housing is not “fixed.” I would then yes, qualify the student(s) as McKinney-Vento eligible.
