Eligibility Question
I have a family who lived together: mother, father, child of mother/father, child of mother only. There was a family (parental) dispute, the father and mother exchanged words and he told her and her child to leave the home. The mother does not want to go back to the home. They are living with the mother’s mom in a different city. I asked the mother is she or her child are in danger. She said they are not in danger but will not be going back to the house. She is hoping to find a rental home/apartment in the area within the next 30 days. The child would also need transportation.
My first thought is that they left the home due to domestic relations so they would qualify under McKinney-Vento but now I am second guessing myself. Am I correct?
Thank you!
Important
Hi, Crystal (@FletcherC),
Thank you for reaching out with this question. Situations like this can fall into the gray areas of McKinney-Vento and often require careful consideration of the specific facts.
From the information you shared, it appears the family may qualify, as they were asked to leave due to a dispute between the adults and are now temporarily residing with the grandmother while the mother seeks permanent housing. Because this arrangement is temporary and resulted from a loss of housing, the student may lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This does not appear to be a planned move or a permanent living situation.
I encourage you to reach out to your Regional Grant Coordinator to share any additional details or nuances that may inform and support your final determination.
Warmly,
Kelly
