Truant MKV Students
I’m wondering what are our options as a school when we have MKV students who are to the point of truancy? I understand that we cannot withdraw them from the school, but what other options do we have if the student is simply not engaging in school at all, they are basically just sitting on our enrollment but not participating.
Important
Hey Kyeata,
This is a really important topic to address and Iām sure many other liaisons have experienced this. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act places significant emphasis on removing barriers to education and maintaining enrollment for students experiencing homelessness. The ultimate goal is to get the student engaged and attending.
A core requirement of McKinney-Vento is that the Local Educational Agency (LEA) must eliminate barriers to the enrollment, attendance, and success of students experiencing homelessness. Absences directly related to homelessness should not be treated as unexcused for truancy purposes.. I would recommend looking at all barriers, equipping a team at your school to help with the barriers, keeping data of how your LEA is supporting your MV students. If all efforts have been put in place to address the barriers, a best interest review of school selection may be appropriate if the student has another school option based on school of residence. There is a great best interest document in the resources tab.
Please feel free to comment with more info and questions and we can see how we can help! š Thanks!!
