Here is a sample script you could personalize.
“Hi, my name is (Your Name), and I’m the McKinney-Vento Liaison for (School District Name). I’m reaching out because we received information that your family may be experiencing a temporary living situation. First, I want to assure you that this is a private conversation and everything we discuss is confidential and meant to support you and your student(s). Do you have a few minutes to talk?”
“I work with families whose living situations may fall under the McKinney-Vento Act. This federal law helps ensure that children and youth experiencing housing instability have full access to school and support services. This includes things like staying at their current school, receiving school supplies, transportation support, and other assistance.”
“I apologize for the personal nature of this conversation but can I ask a few questions to better understand your current living situation? This is only to determine whether your child is eligible for support under this program.”
“Is your family staying in a shelter, hotel, living with others due to loss of housing or financial hardship, or in another temporary arrangement?”
“Thank you for sharing that. Based on what you’ve told me, it sounds like your family does qualify for support under McKinney-Vento. I’d love to share some of the ways we can help make things easier for your child at school.”
“Some of the supports available include:”
“Immediate school enrollment without documents like proof of residency or immunizations”
“Transportation to and from their school of origin if needed”
“Free meals at school”
“School supplies or help with uniforms”
“Help connecting to community resources, like food, housing, or health services”
“Please know that our goal is to make sure your child can stay stable and successful in school, no matter your housing situation. I’m here to support you through this process, and you can call or email me any time with questions or needs.”
“My contact information is (Phone Number) and (Email). I’ll also send this to you in writing. Do you have any questions for me right now?”
