Hello Lalaloopsy, I think you would first want to determine whether the appointment is an occasional circumstance or an ongoing need. If it is a rare or one-time appointment, the district would not necessarily be required to create a special mid-day transportation route. However, if the student has recurring appointments that affect their ability to arrive at school, the district should work with the family and transportation department to identify a transportation arrangement that does not create a barrier to the student’s enrollment and full participation in school.
If by “specialized transportation” you mean transportation is included as a service in the student’s IEP, you will also want to coordinate with your special education department to ensure the transportation arrangement complies with the student’s IEP and the district’s obligations under IDEA.
