Transportation In District
I have a family that began experiencing homelessness on October 2025. By December 2025, they were able to regain housing in the district. I know that families stay MV eligible for the remainder of the school year even if they do find housing.
I had a parent email me to say that her position hours changed at her job and she will now work from about 5:30pm-3:30am. School begins around 8 am and gets out around 3:05pm. Would I provide the students transportation in this situation?
Thank you!
Important
Hey @FletcherC, Under the McKinney-Vento Act, because the family became homeless during the 2025–2026 school year, the students remain eligible for all MV services—including transportation—for the entire remainder of that school year, even though they are now permanently housed. You are correct that once a student is identified as MV-eligible, they retain that status for the duration of the academic year in which they secure permanent housing. This is designed to provide “educational stability,” ensuring that the trauma of homelessness isn’t followed by the trauma of being forced to change schools or losing the ability to get there.
Please let us know if we can help with brainstorming any transportation plan ideas if that would be helpful. Thanks for all you are doing!
