Hi @stephaniesimmons – we are here to help! Are you wondering about ways to support your McKinney-Vento students after identifying?
Here are few go-to items to focus on when helping out our students:
- Arrange transportation to and from the school of origin
- Determine if the child or youth needs transportation.
- Contact the transportation coordinator or transportation department to arrange for transportation to begin as expeditiously as possible.
- Ensure that the mode of transportation does not create barriers for the student to attend.
- Provide school supplies or other needed items to help remove barriers to their education
- Make referrals to community organizations to meet other needs such as medical, dental, or mental health
- Talk with the family about needs and work to refer to community resources (food pantry, housing support, etc.).
- Ensure that families with younger children are aware of early childhood programs in the community, and understand their right to priority enrollment.
